I wrote and recorded this song to process and survive a series of events that were going on in my life. An attempt to pour pain into the mold of something beautiful. I was inspired by the Beatles song “Tomorrow Never Knows” and attempted to capture some of the other-world quality that song has.
Some guitar melodies were created by playing vocal lines backwards and then recording them played on guitar. I basically broke all the rules of pop song structure and just allowed the music to flow in a linear progression. Originally this was going to just be a 30 minute sound collage to go to sleep to, but as I added more layers it took shape into a song of sorts. I then trimmed it down to its current length of four minutes. There are still 30 minutes of recorded cars driving by in the rain on North Beacon Street in Brighton MA in the vault for possible future use.
Special thanks to my old friend R. for the “are you awake?” vocal sample edited from a conversation I recorded with her in the studio many years ago.
